OVERVIEW

Designed a consolidated dashboard simplifying visualization & report access for a sporting goods company across 100+ stores in India

  • Zonal Managers across the country had to pull up reports across 5 different functions on their existing internal ERP system to assess the health of a store

    • This was impractical because most times they wanted just a general overview of the status of stores and not the details

    • Therefore, they wanted a quick and easy way to visualize the maintenance health of their 100+ stores across India

  • Name of the client is not shown due to NDA

PROBLEM STATEMENT

“ How might we visualize maintenance incidents across 100+ stores in India? ”

THE SOLUTION

Multi-select stores and period of interest from drop-downs.

View the overall health of store and hover over charts to learn more.

REQUIREMENTS GATHERING

Need to provide a streamlined means to visualize data from 5 different KPIs for easy assessment of store health

Zonal managers required a way to visualize all maintenance incidents data at once to get an overview & understanding.

I first identified the key data to represent, researched the best graph types for each metric, and reviewed each module to determine the most important data to display.

IDEATION & DATA VISUALIZATION

Simplicity is Key to Communicate Effectively

  • I evaluated the strengths and weaknesses of each visualization method to determine which could best convey the data.

  • This involved multiple discussions with the client to refine their needs.

  • While a line graph seemed suitable, users found it difficult to interpret at a glance.

    • Instead, they preferred stacked bar charts, which provided a clearer and more accessible overview of the three categories.

WIREFRAMING & PROTOTYPING

5 iterations and 14 designs later

Iterations of the multiple designs

Once I had an understanding of the client requirements and representations they preferred, I did the following:

  • Built a design system and presented it to developers and my manager for feedback.

  • Created multiple design options and screens, iterating based on feedback from my manager.

  • Incorporated suggestions while explaining my design choices.

  • Shared the updated design with the client-side manager for further input.

  • Worked to ensure the meter, representing the health status, remained the focal point of the dashboard despite other detailed charts.

I faced challenges in highlighting the meter as the primary focus, as other graphs with more detailed data often drew more attention.

FINAL PROTOTYPE

REFLECTIONS

Balancing user, client and developer needs & more usability test runs

  • The main challenge for me was the tight deadline—we had just two weeks to deliver the initial designs, which limited my ability to conduct thorough usability testing.

  • I would have loved to gain insights from actual end users of the app rather than relying solely on feedback from managerial stakeholders.

  • This project was my first major client engagement, and I found it eye-opening to see how thorough background research can directly inform and improve design decisions.

  • It was also the first time I collaborated closely with developers, balancing technical feasibility with design goals to determine what we could realistically deliver to the client. Finding that balance was a valuable learning experience for me.
